Let Me Save You Some Tokens
The Seven-Year Pause
From Gabor Maté, Scattered Minds; Jonathan Haidt, The Anxious Generation; Daniel Amen, Change Your Brain Every Day
I want to think clearly about what interactive experiences — games, feeds,
short video — are doing to the brains in my household, including mine.
What I know, drawn from Gabor Maté's Scattered Minds, Jonathan Haidt's The
Anxious Generation, and Daniel Amen's Change Your Brain Every Day:
- Homo sapiens quadruple their brain size after birth. The runner-up, the
chimpanzee, only doubles.
- By age five, a child has 90% of the neural connections they'll have as an
adult.
- Most animals sprint from birth to reproduction — a cat can have offspring at
one year old.
- Human children pause for roughly seven years before puberty.
- The emotional core of the brain is largely formed by age 12.
- The prefrontal cortex — control, judgment, decision-making — isn't finished
until around 24.
- Neuroplasticity continues your whole life.
Ask me who's in my house and what they actually do on screens, then help me
reason about which developmental window each person is in and what that
particular window is sensitive to.
Two things I need from you. Don't give me a screen-time number — I want to
understand mechanisms, not comply with a limit. And don't let me make this
only about the kids: that last bullet means my own brain is still changing,
and I'd rather not dodge that.

We give AI some ideas to turn into a blog post. We give AI a blog post to tell us the ideas.
Let me save you some tokens. Here are the ideas.
The ideas
- Humans are unique in a bunch of ways.
- Homo sapiens win the brain-growth-after-birth race by quadrupling in size, compared to the runner-up, the chimpanzee, whose brains merely double.
- By five years old, a child’s brain will have 90% of the connections it will have as an adult. They are bundles of potential.
- All other animals go from birth to reproduction as fast as possible — cats, for example, can have offspring at one year old.
- Human children pause for seven years before entering puberty.
- The emotional core of a human brain is formed by 12 years old.
- The prefrontal cortex — control and decision making — is completed around age 24.
- Neuroplasticity, the brain’s capacity to change, lasts your whole life.
As for me
The uncomfortable moment I told a parent, “I know I’m in the video game industry, but I would not let my children play Roblox, and here’s why.”
